As far as wedding traditions go, the lighting of a unity candle is a fairly new tradition. Most often, the ceremony uses two taper candles and a large pillar (the unity candle) in the center. The unity candle ceremony symbolizes the joining of two people, and often times the union of two families in their love for the bride and groom.
