An orchid-inspired DIY wedding in Chicago, IL
Terese and Eric’s October wedding in Chicago had lots of beautiful and vibrant DIY details that reflected a love for exotic flowers – particularly the purple orchid. Dawn E. Roscoe Photography captured their incredible celebration!
My first conversation with my husband was about our mutual love of Japanese printmaking and our dream of attending Tokyo’s cherry blossom festival in spring. So I wanted to use these elements along with the colors inspired by my favorite flower, the purple phalaenopsis orchid, as inspiration for our wedding. At one time my Mother was an award winning orchid grower and while she eventually gave up the hobby, I have continued to love these exotic blooms. I looked far and wide for the right florist who could live up to my high expectations. Luckily I found Lynn of Pollen who not only did an extraordinary job capturing my vision, but also was able to source local hothouse orchids, ever more amazing, the orchids, were grown at the same greenhouse where my mom and I often spent childhood afternoons scouting for blooms. My bridesmaids and I DIY’ed a majority of the details for our event and I sourced most of my materials from The Paper Source. I found three stamps I loved, a vintage scroll reminiscent of the appliqué on my gown and two different Japanese floral motifs that we used for everything from the invitations to the wishing tree cards. Many of our friends are also artists and it was wonderful incorporating their many talents into our day. My maid of honor handmade bracelets for the bridesmaids, one of our groomsmen built frames out of reclaimed wood for the vintage family portraits I had enlarged. A cartoonist friend of ours even sketched our portrait for the CD favors we gave to guests. It really was our dream day. Seeing everything at last come together and being surrounded by everyone we love really was so magical. ~ Terese
