In recent years, the ability to find and reach all of your friends and family has been made incredibly easier through the contacts gained on Facebook. Gone are the days of Rolodex hunting and searching through Mom and Dad’s address books to find Great Aunt Betty’s new Florida address. Through creating events on Facebook and adding ways for friends to give you their addresses, couples have been able to track down exactly who wants to go to the wedding, where their address is, and whether they would like you to bother sending them an invitation or not.
However, there are a few drawbacks to having everyone’s address at your disposal. First, creating an event and asking everyone to post their addresses is not particularly original. For example, the same circle of friends may have gotten about 2,547 different event invites with titles like “FINALLY! Joe and Bertha are tying the knot!” or “You Better Believe We’re Getting Married! Give Us Your Addresses!” After about the 100th Facebook event invite, it may seem more annoying to add congratulations and another address than exciting to celebrate with friends. Second, there is something ever so slightly disconcerting about publicly giving your address on a Facebook invite.
Granted, it is more than likely that people on your guest list already know each other, but there is always the sneaking suspicion that someone who has stumbled upon the event may do something other than send invitations. Finally, the way that Facebook has set up the generic event layout on their website does not allow for much individual expression or give much information about the couple. Of course, it is possible to be creative with the story on the event, but there is no way to make it unique and your own.
However, none of this means that using Facebook event invites should be shunned. On the contrary, Facebook event invites can still help to notify all your friends, family members, and even frenemies that you are in love and don’t care who knows it, but there is a more unique and tasteful way to do it. By creating your own website through avenues such as BesideYouForever.com, you can show off all of your best engagement pictures, tell people more in depth about how you met and where you are going to tie the knot, and basically let people get to know your story. On top of all that, you can provide an RSVP link that allows guests to tell you, and you only, their address and give their congratulations and excitement to you. This also helps couples to keep their address and invitations in an orderly fashion and make this aspect of their wedding preparation basically take care of itself.
